I'll Have Something Else, Please

Dear Friends,

We've all been asked whether the glass if half full or half empty, right? I was recently at a doctor's appointment. After my doctor reviewed my extensive medical history, especially a very illness filled last semester, he used this analogy. However, he said that while most people think there are only two kinds of people in the world, those who see the glass as half full or half empty, there is a third. He said I'm that third type of person who is handed a half full or half empty glass in life and instead of choosing to see it a certain way simply asks for a new glass.

I laughed in response, but it was not until later that evening that I really started to think about what this meant. There are optimistic and pessimistic people in this world. But there are also people who won't settle for either way. Why? Why won't we settle? We won't settle, because neither option is good enough. Neither option feels right, because neither option is anything more than a lens by which we can view the world. That lens only looks at things differently, but it does not change things.

We all go through different stages in life. Some are full of great optimism, when we choose to view the good instead of the evil parts of life. Other times are full of sadness, when there is less thrill or joy. Still other times call for change, when we can't just sit back and view our circumstances in a different light. This is what choosing hope is all about; it's about choosing to be an agent of change, big or small, in those moments.

With hope,
Sara
